Fall is right around the corner and many fall enthusiasts like myself, are eager for the season of orange leaves, lattes, pumpkins, sweaters, and dim evening skies. Halloween tends to become obsolete for many teens and young adults. Many feel as if though Halloween activities such as dressing up, trick-or-treating, and carving pumpkins expire at the end of childhood. However, there are still many ways one can enjoy Halloween even as a teen or adult. One great way of doing this is by holding a costume party. Gone are the days of tacky but endearing party city costumes. Here are some creative costume party themes for this Halloween!
Villians - One of the easiest and most common themes is a villain costume party. Have everyone dress up as their villain of choice. This can range from Disney villains to villains in pop culture and movies. It's fun to see who everyone chose to dress up as and it is amusing to watch so many villains from various fandoms come together in one place.
History - Another costume party theme is having everyone dress up as historical figures. You can set a parameter on this if you like, such as ancient historical figures or old European historical figures, even figures solely from American history. The decor in this party would have an antique and gothic look crossed over with the creepy elements of Halloween. There is also a wide range of snacks that can be offered such as old historic dishes such as decadent cakes, tarts, pastries, soups, finger sandwiches, and so on. This theme is perfect for any host/hostess that has a bug for old-world aesthetics.
First Letter - This is a theme that has been picking up in popularity recently. At this party, the guests would arrive dressed as something that starts with the same first letter as their name. For example, a person named Bella can come in dressed as a bear, a person named Anna can come in dressed as an angel, and a person named Tina can come in dressed as a burly truck driver, and so on. There is a huge element of surprise with this theme as one's name can lead to so many possibilities.
High School - This theme is fun and can be a nostalgic throwback for those not in high school anymore. the guests would dress up as caricatures of typical high school staff members. This can make for some hilarious costumes such as the dramatic english teacher, the out of shape gym coach, the awkward math teacher, the nerdy history teacher, the busy janitor, the commanding principal, the tired lunch lady, the chatty school nurse, and even the loud bus driver.
Harry Potter - Another common but fun theme. The guests would dress up in their affiliated Hogwarts house attire. The decorations, games, and food at this party would be the highlight as the Harry Potter series has so much to draw inspiration from. There can even be a quidditch game, though the players will be running on the ground and not flying on broomsticks.
Classic Literature - Similar to the theme of the historic figures, guests will arrive dressed ad popular literature characters. This can include characters such as Romeo & Juliet, Jane Eyre, Macbeth, Huckleberry Finn, Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, and so on. This is a great theme if you and your friends are particularly into literature. You can also place parameters here such as genre, time period, or even modern literature as opposed to classic.
Arthur - This classic and beloved childrens show from PBS Kids has given us many endearing and colorful characters. All of these characters have a distinct look, so it makes for easy costumes using casual clothing. Characters can include: Arthur, DW, Buster, Francine, Muffy, Brain, Binky, George, Sue Ellen, Prunella, Mr. Ratburn, Fern, Ladonna, and many more. This theme can also be applied to any other cartoon show with an ample number of characters.
Hollywood - This is also a common but fun theme. Everyone would dress up as any celebrity of their choice. These costumes can end up looking really funny and people try to attempt recreating iconic celebrity looks. This can be ramped up by setting a rule requiring guests to impersonate their celebrity.
Greek Mythology - All of the guests would dress up as their favorite greek mythology character. Very creative and unique looks can arise from this theme. The party itself would have a chic Hellenic look to it with decor such as vines, pillars, gold accents, and white silky cloth draping the tables. The menu options would be effortlessly upscale with olives, meats, fish, various kinds of pasta, and pastries such as Baklavas. There can even be a movie segment since there are many Greek mythology-inspired movies to pick from. If you want to stick with the basics, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Theif is always a favorite.
Memes - This one is quite self-explanatory. Have the guests dress up as their meme of choice. This makes for a creative and comedic party that perfectly snapshots the current pop culture trends. It takes a bit more creativity to dress up as a meme than a traditional Halloween monster, character, or villain. This theme can really encourage creativity without breaking the bank on fancy Halloween costumes. The menu can also be kept casual here with popular fast food items to reflect the current pop culture trends.
These are all the different themes that can be used for Halloween parties this year! Which theme did you personally like? Comment below. When choosing the theme, ask yourself, do you prefer scary, comedic, or glamour? That should make narrowing down to a theme much easier.
