Working remotely from home has become the new norm this year. For many, workplaces or schools bring a different mindset as opposed to one's home. Many of us are used to being motivated and productive in our work or academic environment as opposed to our home environment. Consequentially, to emulate that productive environment, many of us have set up desk spaces and small work areas in our homes to help us reignite that productive mindset. If this is your first time setting up a desk space or you simply want to refine your desk space, then this post is for you!
-Assess Your Needs:
For any desk space to be practical and functional, one must assess the nature of their work, their routine, and any stationery or books they often use. For instance, a literature student's desk space will vary from an art student's desk space. The literature student may need mini bookshelves and the art student would need stationary racks to organize their markers and paintbrushes. In the same fashion, an office worker would need space for their laptop, printer, file racks, and so forth.
Start by asking your self these questions:
-Do you use a laptop or desktop? Is a computer vital to your work? Because if it is, you want to make ample space for it on your desk.
-Do you need file racks, mini bookshelves, or stationary organizers? Maybe you have files, textbooks, or stationary that you need to store at your desk. If yes, then assess what type of organizer you need and find one that is functional for your needs while also being an adequate size for your desk space.
-Is your desk in an open space or is it up against a wall? If the desk is in an open space, then we have to be mindful of all the things we are adding to the desk as its limited space can get cluttered easily. If the desk is against a window and not a wall, the same factors have to be considered as an open space desk. If the desk is set against a wall, then the wall serves as extra space for mini shelves, bulletin boards, whiteboards, calendars, and so forth.
-Will you be utilizing the space under the desk? This can mean adding a paper bin, a printer, a mini drawer for more storage, or just using the space to store your backpack or work bag.
-Picking The Right Desk:
Everyone's idea of the perfect desk is different based on their needs. After you have assessed your needs and work habits, you need to assess what desk style best suits you. Do you want a smaller minimal desk? A large spacious desk? Is there a color preference? Some people feel more productive working at white desks as opposed to classic wood desks. Do you need a desk with ample leg room? Do you need a desk with drawers or a keyboard tray? After you have considered these factors, go ahead and search for your perfect desk. Some easy and affordable places to start looking include Ikea, Walmart (online), Target (online), At Home, Office Depot, Wayfair (online), 5 Miles, Facebook Marketplace, and any local antique furniture shops.
-Choosing An Aesthetic:
Decorating your desk or styling it to a certain theme is absolutely optional. Some people, myself included, love to personalize their desk space. There are a multitude of trendy aesthetics to choose from such as Dark Academia, Light Academia, Minimalist, Artsy, Fashion Chic, Girly, Pastel, and so on.
Here are some examples of these aesthetics. You can always use Pinterest for more inspiration.
