The fashion doll world has been in some crisis for the past few years. Many toy manufacturers such as Mattel, MGA Ent, Hasbro, Spin Master, and so son, have been struggling to put out fashion dolls that would ace the complex current day market. Many kids are heavily invested in technology now, so they outgrew toys much faster than the previous generations. On the other hand, doll collectors are a massive niche within the toy collecting community and they prefer complexity, quality, and artistic value in dolls. Satisfying both camps has been a struggle in the past few years for doll brands. It is tricky to satisfy kids with trendy fashionable dolls that parents would also approve of while also satisfying the doll collecting community. Mattel's Barbie line has been struggling for the past few years with only its iconic legacy keeping it afloat. MGA on the other hand has been consistently making efforts to produce relevant doll lines after their iconic Bratz doll line faded from popularity.
MGA has also produced the notoriously trendy LOL Surprise dolls. Those dolls however serve a much younger demographic and don't satisfy both camps of consumers. This July, MGA has come out with a doll brand that has the best shot at success in the doll world at the moment. This doll line is the best doll line to come out in years in terms of quality, concept, and aesthetics. Let me introduce to you, Rainbow High! The concept is that each doll is themed after colors in the rainbow. The idea is that 7 girls each correlating to a color of the rainbow attend a fashion school called Rainbow High. These dolls have quality long hair, are fully articulated, and modern trendy fashions that both kids and collectors like. As a doll collector myself, this is the first time 3 years that I have been excited about a new doll line. This doll line has the potential to be what the consumers have been asking for in the past few years. So lets dive into each doll from the launch!
Ruby: This is the red-themed doll. She has an edgy street style with a tomboyish twist. She wears a red logo T-shirt clearly inspired by the brand Supreme, a red leather bustier, a red flannel, a leather cap, red skinny jeans with gold scribbles, and platform heels. Her style is urban, modern, city chic, and edgy. This doll will appeal to girls who don't resonate with pretty pink princesses and traditional feminine dolls. This is great because more girls can find a character in this line that they can relate to.
Poppy: This is the orange-themed doll. Poppy has a feminine but bold style. It seems inspired by Instagram fashion trends. Poppy wears an orange puffer jacket, a peach mini dress, monarch butterfly style knee-high boots, and butterfly hair clips. She is one of my favorites from the line. I love how neon oranges and soft oranges were blended to create one cohesive look. The butterfly clips are very trendy right now and they were a great touch. The attention to trendy details shows that the brand is paying attention to the fashion that the youth is into nowadays. Poppy has a soft baddie type of aesthetic. She manages to be girly but still seem edgy. This doll will appeal to a whole range of people, from young girls to fashion-savvy doll collectors.
Sunny: This is the yellow-themed doll. Sunny is clearly inspired by Japanese Kawaii fashion. She sports two space buns, a yellow sparkly dress, gold jacket, rainbow socks, and rainbow platform sneakers. Her style is cute but stylish. She manages to have an innocent charm without being overly childish or babyish. The Japanese themed kawaii fashion works out very well for Sunny. She is bright, colorful, sparkly, while still being very fashion-forward. I can see many young girls and even kawaii fashion enthusiasts being interested in this doll.
Jade: This is the green-themed doll. She seems very Billie Eilish inspired as she sports a tomboyish look with a bomber jacket, graphic tee, boyish shorts, sneakers, and a beanie. This doll will appeal to girls who are not into the princess-like girly dolls. This doll is edgy, fresh, and urban. She can palette to many niches and even entice girls who don't like girly dolls to get her. Her long neon hair is perfectly curled, giving a feminine touch to her boyish look. This doll has a unique concept that is often not seen in mainstream dolls.
Skylar: This is the blue-themed doll. She has a very chic yet cute style to her. Her denim style is very reminiscent of modern-day Instagram fashion. She has a cute yet edgy look. Her style is almost hipster-like with translucent boots that resemble Doc Martens. She sports an all-denim outfit with a crop top and denim skirt. A transparent belt was added to the outfit and it adds that modern-day Instagram fashion feel to it. This doll is a great bridge doll for girls who like edgy and girly styles. She is not too feminine and not too edgy. She is the perfect blend. Her fashion resembles modern-day casual teen fashion the most.
