Heyylloo Blogger World! Last year I did a post on the Top Boy Groups of Kpop, today I will do my picks for the Top Girl Groups in Kpop. These are all based on my opinion and I will explain my reasoning for why I picked each! This year in general I have been more into Girl Groups, so scroll through this list and lets see if we can relate on any groups! These are in no particular ranking by the way =)
GIRLS GENERATION
Need I say much about this group? Girls Generation/SNSD are THE legends in the Kpop Girl Group History. There is a decade worth of music to listen to from these Queens. There is something for everyone as they are very versatile, and have tried all different concepts from cute and girly to straight up cool and badass. You will find something you like for sure. On top of that their fashion sense and music videos are iconic! They played a huge part in shaping the fashion trends and cinematography expectations today for girl groups. There are many girls in this band so you will find your soul animal or your bias! Their discography is hefty and, it is a lot to go through. You will literally travel through time with their music, from their humble beginnings with not so flashy music videos to recent years with huge productions, style, and flair. Even people who are not Kpop fans have at least heard of them or seen a song or two.
RED VELVET
Now, Red Velvet is the little sister group of Girls Generation, being from the same record label (SM Entertainment) obviously. Red Velvet brings something fresh to the table. They are very versatile and bizarre even. Their music is not straightforward and their music videos are not easily digestible. They are weird but wildly artistic. Each era of theirs was a brand new concept, with a brand new vibe and styles. They have done smash hits such as Ice Cream Cake, Russian Roulette, and Dumb Dumb Dumb, just to name a few iconic pieces. They have done exotic themes, to creepy themes, to cute 90s themes, to bizarre colorful themes. They are a bit hard to grasp at first, but they are worth it. They are currently one of the top girl groups in the industry in the recent years and serve everything up fresh and never done before. To add a nice bonus, these girls are AMAZING at live vocals and live performances, all while dancing. They are basically known for their outstanding live vocals with intensive performances. Guys, they eat their own CDs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
BLACKPINK
BlackPink is the little sister group of the former and mega successful girlgroup 2NE1 from YG entertainment. Blackpink has broken record after record and are fairly new in the industry. It has been only 2-3 years to them being around actively. They are the badass, girl crush group that can slay your existence. The foursome are impeccably diverse, they each dress differently and possess their own styles, on top of that they are all insanely flawless. BlackPink is a group for folks who love Hip Hop and Dance Music. They dish out very swaggy, pop influenced, cool songs that go viral internationally. They have broken records for views, fame, and concert ticket sales. They are THE hottest group right now and the world is obsessed with them at the moment. While these fierce girls have slick raps, soft vocals, killer street styles, amazing dance moves, and insane visuals accompanied with high production music videos, they have very little content. YG is to blame for this, as the company keeps stalling their comebacks, and from debut to now they only have 1 mini album! So you will run out of material quick. This group really tests the public's patience, but they still release bops that will be on loop for a while.
TWICE
Now I am personally not a Twice fan and everyone knows they can use some vocal improvement, but there are many great things about this girl group from JYP Entertainment. Twice is the pinnacle of the Kpop image. Not only do these girls break into high views on Youtube, sell out concerts, and notoriously well known internationally, they possess all the things that Koreans love in in a Kpop Girl Group. They are a cute and girly band dripping in feminine appeal, which is something that many Asian countries adore. They are the proper classy ladies, the soft singing cute girls in pastel dresses, the kawaii girls singing ear worm worthy catchy songs. Their songs are more on the bubblegum pop side accompanied with bright and colorful music videos. They might not be my cup of tea, but they are so loved that fans even claim they are the next Girls Generation. Give them a chance with an open mind, they will get a song or two stuck in your hand!
MOMOLAND
Now this group is a very interesting case. They don't count as a top tier girl group in the industry yet, but in this past year or so they have shattered the girl group world. They are an anomaly. They started out very miniscule, with a small fanbase, and barely known. But after one song and music video called BBoom BBoom, they have exploded into fame. Their music video broke into the high view counts on Youtube and their fanbase grew rapidly. These girls are slightly like Twice but a bit less girly and cutesy. They are now known as that group that releases viral catchy songs. These girls came back from BBoom BBoom with a similar song called BAAM. That song did not break any records but it gained a lot more views than their usual work would. Momoland seems to finding and cementing a place for themselves as the group of colorful and funny girls that release catchy, funky, upbeat songs. They are doing well and are on an upwards trend, if the next few years are good for them, they will end up being a solid staple in the girl group world. A classic rags to riches story!
PRISTIN
Pristin falls into an umbrella of having music that is a mix of Twice and Momoland's vibe. Pristin is a group by Pledis Entertainment. They are not a top tier girl group yet either, but have a loyal fanbase. This group has an interesting climb to success as well. This band includes some former members from IOI, a now disbanded famous girlgroup. On top of that hype, they gained alot of attention through a fat shaming period that went down for the group. Their youngest member Kyla was ruthlessly shamed for her weight online, causing huge news outlets and social media accounts to speak out about it. This garnered a lot of attention towards Pristin, thus enlarging their fanbase. If the next few years go well for Pristin, they have a chance at becoming a staple group as well. But here is the BEST part about Pristin. The Girl group writes and produces their OWN songs! They have a similar concept to their brother group, Seventeen, that also writes and produces their own content. I don't know about you, but I like idols having some say in their content. Many idol groups have no say in their work, but Pristin does. This is what makes this group special. The girls have a knack for creating catchy and colorful songs, so give them a chance!
Well Kpop stans this was my list for top Kpop girl groups. I know there are many other great bands out there, but I mentioned the ones that stood out the most to me. Take it as a grain of salt and check them out. Who knows? You might find a new fandom!
